Classroom Work

All the teachers and pupils throughout the school worked hard in learning about Water topics which integrated well with a variety of curricular subjects. For example Junior and Senior Infants learned about water sources, uses of water and The Water Cycle. They even experimented with making a cloud which was quite interesting! 1st to 6th classes engaged in valuable learning about Weather elements in particular investigating hurricanes, flooding and they experimented with freezing and melting. Lots of rhymes/poems and songs about water were learned in all classes and some of the senior classes did a great job on devising water acrostic poems.

Green School Water Theme

St.Michael’s N.S. began their journey of learning about Water and Water Conservation in September 2017. The Green School Committees worked tirelessly over the last year beginning with conducting an initial environmental review throughout all classes in an effort to establish pupils’ knowledge of the following:

  • Where does water come from?
  • Where does the schools’ water come from?
  • Where does waste water go?
  • Where does the schools’ waste water go?

Initial findings were positive but what was interesting was the lack of knowledge on the true source of the schools’ water i.e. Lough na Garnaman and so the committee used the findings to educate the school as to the correct answers to the above questions. From that we felt that it would be beneficial for all students to learn more about where our water comes from and the treatment process involved before it enters our school and our homes, a project we saved for our action day.

The Green School committee proceeded to gather, share and discuss lots of interesting facts about water together with a selection of Water Wise tips for saving water. They also organised a Water Slogan Competition for the whole school, the winner of which was Lauren McGahon with the very intriguing slogan: ‘SLOW THE FLOW, SAVE H2O’!

Christmas Activities in Mrs McGuirk’s Classroom!

Everyone has been working hard in our classroom with Christmas activities. We have been singing ‘Tá an Nollaig Buailte Linn’, doing Christmas themed Irish role-plays, and making Christmas Cards ‘as Gaeilge’. In religion we learned about Advent and the Nativity Story. Everyday we participate in an active Advent Calendar as part of our Active School’s Campaign. At maths time, we begun lessons by answering Christmas themed riddles. We also learned about Christmas traditions around the world and about the importance of fire safety at Christmas time. We have created some lovely art work around the theme of Advent and Christmas. Some of these can be viewed below!

Check out the photos below of our preparations.

Talent Show

On Thursday 20th December 2018 we held a school talent show. All children were given the opportunity to take part. We had many fantastic performances from the very talented children in our school. As the children performed so well, they were rewarded with treats and a movie in the afternoon. This was a very enjoyable experience for both participators and spectators.

Getting into the Christmas Spirit

This week and last week Mrs. Mc Guirk’s Room have been busy singing ‘Calóga Sneachta’, as well as talking and writing about ‘An Fear Sneachta’ in our Gaeilge Lessons. We listened to ‘The Snowman’ by Raymond Briggs and completed a sequencing activity, where we had to tell the story by putting pictures in the correct order. The children told the story orally individually and in groups – they put the story into in their own words in written form, using the pictures to help. We completed an art lesson, watching the movie version of ‘The Snowman’. The children had lots of inspiration and were very busy making their own ‘Snazzy Snowmen’ and also ‘Sensational Sock Snowmen’.

Christmas 2018

We have been feeling very festive lately in Ms. Atkinson’s room. Check out some of the Christmas activities completed by the children this year!

The children created beautiful snow globes using paper plates and clingfilm.

Children enjoyed some extra golden time at the beginning of December to allow time for Rang 6 to decorate our Christmas tree. They did a wonderful job!

The children used recycled materials to design Christmas Tealight Holders as a Christmas gift for their parents. They were a huge success!

Ms. Atkinson held a colouring competition in our classroom. While she found it difficult to choose a winner, they were very deserving!

Nursery Rhyme Challenge

The infants never cease to amaze us as they complete their second Nursery Rhyme Challenge. Well done to all the boys and girls who proudly present their certificates!

Christmas Activities in the Infant Classroom

The last few weeks have been packed with fun, excitement and creativity in the Infant Classroom. The children engaged in a variety of Christmas activities such as learning Christmas rhymes, singing songs both in English and Irish; two of our favourites being ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘Tá an Nollaig Buaillte Linn’. We learned about Advent, The Christmas Story and chatted about Christmas traditions both in Ireland and in other countries worldwide. We also enjoyed doing a Christmas quiz together. The children made unique Christmas tree decorations using lollipop sticks and decorated with assorted jewels and buttons. Our sticky fingers got to work on making edible Christmas trees covered with smarties and sprinkles…yummy!!

All of the boys and girls in Junior and Senior Infants are on Santa’s good list this year and so we are now ready for our holidays as we eagerly await Santa’s visit… only a few more sleeps to go!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Winter Robins

These beautiful robins were made by some very creative infants this Winter. Don’t forget to leave food out for them!
