We had a very important visitor here today (22nd May 2019) in St. Michaels N.S. Donaghmoyne. John Mullen from the Active Flag Programme came to assess our school as an Active School. He was delighted with the work all our staff and pupils have been doing and will continue to do as part of this programme. We are delighted to announce that we have been successful and we have been awarded our Active Schools Flag.

In recent weeks, we have also been successful in achieving our Health Promoting School Status from Jennifer Treanor (Co-Ordinator of the Health Promoting Schools Programme) and we received our Health Promoting Certificate and flag.

Our third ‘Green Flag’ for Water Preservation and Conservation was also awarded to us by Moira Kelly (Monaghan County Council), who visited our school for our water themed day. We will celebrate everyone’s hard work and dedication towards the end of the school year when we raise our three flags.

Well done everyone on your fantastic achievements!

Monaghan County Museum Visit

On Thursday 28th of March 2019, we were very fortunate to have Pauline Tilson from Monaghan County Museum visit our school to give a talk about World War II. The children learned lots about evacuees and what their lives entailed. They watched a video of a man telling his story as an evacuee. They looked at a suitcase containing items that evacuees would have had when they were forced to leave their homes. They also learned about rationing and what things people would have been allowed during war times. The children also made their own name tags, like the ones worn by evacuees and they imagined they were an evacuee and wrote a letter home to their families. The children found the visit informative and enjoyable.  A huge thank you to Pauline for her time!

We were very fortunate to have Pauline back to visit us again on Monday 21st  May 2019. This time around, we learned about different types of transport people used around the time of World War II. We learned about the different types of bicycles and cars from the past and about the Great Northern Railway that was in operation a that time. The children got the chance to examine photographic evidence as well as the opportunity to handle some artefacts from that period.

Pauline joined us for her final visit (Monday 27th May 2019). She spoke to the pupils from 1st to 6th class on communication during World War II. The pupils learned about the most common forms of communication at the time, including, letters, telegrams, newspapers and television. The children examined evidence of different communication forms from the past and compared them with the modern form they are familiar with today. Once again, thanks to Pauline for spending time with us and informing us about lots of interesting facts surrounding World War II!

Confirmation 2019

Congratulations to the 14 children from St. Michael’s N.S. who were confirmed by Mgr Joseph McGuinness on Sunday 12th May 2019 in St Patrick’s Church Broomfield. Sincere thanks to their parents, families, sponsors and teachers who prepared them so well for confirmation, and to all involved in the ceremony.

Our most heartfelt thanks to the choir for the fine choice of music and singing so beautifully, which greatly enriched the ceremony.

First Holy Communion 2019

Saturday the 18th of May 2019 was a momentous occasion for the first communicants in St.Michael’s N.S. The community of Donaghmoyne gathered together with pride to watch eight girls from our school make their First Holy Communion. The children’s participation on the day, combined with their artwork to decorate the Church made it truly memorable for all.

The school choir also enhanced the ceremony beautifully. This long anticipated day was a huge success. Well done to the first communicants and to their families for all their hard work on the journey that led to this day.

Heartfelt thanks to our officiating priest, Father Daly and to all those involved in making this day a very special one.

Hurling Taster Session

On Tuesday 14th of May 2019 we were very active in our school. We were fortunate to have Ryan Gaffney (on behalf of Monaghan G.A.A.) with us today to give us a taster session in hurling. The boys and girls had great fun and they also got the opportunity to practice some hurling skills. See some of the action below!

Learning about Minibeasts

Minibeasts in Mrs. Mc Guirk’s Room!

We have been busy learning about the characteristics of different minibeasts this month! We learned about many different minibeasts that we find in nature. We wrote about their defining traits and picked our favourites and did our own research to find out 5 Fabulous Facts about them.  We shared our findings with the class ‘as reporters’ on our own Nature Show called ‘Creepy Crawlies Unveiled’!  We then went outdoors and went on a search for which minibeasts we could find. The children completed worksheets in groups to identify which minibeasts they had found. We also decided to draw our own imaginary minibeasts.  Have a look at some of the things we got up to below!

John ‘The Runner’ McGeough One Mile Race

Congratulations to Seán-Óg and Lucy who completed the John ‘The Runner’ McGeough One Mile Race in Blackhill on Friday 3rd May 2019. Seán-Óg completed the race in 5 minutes 30 seconds, and Lucy completed it in 12 minutes. Both children were quite close to John McGeough’s time of 4 minutes 30 seconds.

We are so proud of you both!
