Christmas in the Infant Classroom

We have been very busy in the lead up to Christmas in the infant classroom. We spent lots of time preparing for our musical ‘School of Rock’. Considering that it was many of the children’s first time on stage, we couldn’t believe the amazing show that they put on!

We learned all about Daidí na Nollaig as Gaeilge, and recited some Christmas counting rhymes in Maths. In religion the children learned all about the Christmas story, and they performed the story in small groups during our drama lessons. You can see one of our performances here: https://fb.watch/hv_tLbWLpv/. We also created some beautiful Christmas themed art and had a hot chocolate movie day!

Finally, we were very lucky on Friday 16th December to have a very special visit from Santa Claus! All of the boys and girls got a special present from Santa – thank you to our parent’s association for arranging this!

Well done boys and girls on all of your hard work this term. Wishing you all a safe and peaceful Christmas!

Term 2 in 5th and 6th Class

The second term has been a hive of activity in 5th & 6th Class. The pupils engaged in Procedural Writing in both English and Irish. Dramas were created in groups as part of our Irish learning on ‘Bia’ agus ‘Sa Bhialann’ which were quite the entertainment!

A lot of planning, research and learning took place with the compilation and presentation of the children’s projects on World War 1 which were assessed by their peers.

In recent weeks 5th & 6th class had fun with fantasy poems and even wrote some amazing fantasy poems themselves.

Of course the highlight of this term has been taking part in our highly successful school production, ‘School of Rock’. Next stop-Hollywood!! The excitement has been mounting in our classroom also for the most wonderful time of the year. Christmas songs & dances have permeated classroom activities for days now and the pupils made some beautiful Christmas Tree paper plates using skilful weaving.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Enjoy all the festivities!

School of Rock

After weeks of rehearsals, we were delighted to perform our school musical ‘School of Rock’ for the community on Thursday 8th December.

We are incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication of every child in our school. From designing posters and tickets, to learning lines and perfecting dance moves, no task was ever too much for the children. They were determined to put on a good show, and what a show it was – we were blown away by their incredible performance! Such a wonderful display of talent and energy!

As always, there were many people behind the scenes who helped us put on such an amazing show. Thank you to Tara McAuley, our musical director, for her dedication over the past number of years. Thank you to Karen McDermott for her beautiful backdrop, and to Mark McDermott for videoing the show. Thank you to everyone in Lisdoonan Community Centre for going above and beyond to help as always. Thank you finally to the parents who donated prizes for the raffle, your unending support doesn’t go unnoticed!

What an amazing end to 2022 in St. Michael’s National School!

Big Excitement for the Toy Show Tonight!

Mrs. Mc Guirk’s 1st and 2nd Class had great fun today, designing jumpers for Ryan Tubridy for tonight’s show. I think you will all agree, they have done a really good job.
Enjoy the show tonight everyone!

Congratulations Shéa!

Congratulations and well done to Shéa Kelly who won a First Aid Kit for our school. He won a colouring competition at Pilgrims Food Master’s for Health and Safety Week.

Science Week 14th-28th November 2022

1st and 2nd Class have been very busy in the field of science. We had Louise Swords from CLAYOTIC in on Monday 14th of November 2022, using clay to make various different dinosaurs with the children. We had a webinar from Linda Birkin, telling us lots of facts about insects. We also learned lots of different Science facts each day and completed various exciting experiments in class too. Have a look at our Science expertise at work below!

Halloween 2022

We had great day on 28th October 2022 celebrating Halloween in St. Michael’s National School. The children dressed up and each class had a Halloween party. We also held a whole-school Halloween disco. We took part in ‘Trick or Treat for Sick Children’ and raised almost €300 for this very worthy cause, well done everyone!

We also held our monthly assembly, where numerous children were awarded with certificates for their hard work this term.

Wishing you all a happy and safe Halloween!

First term in 5th & 6th Class

What an amazing first term we had together in 5th & 6th class. The pupils have worked so hard engaging in individual & group projects. We completed a study of our very own county of Monaghan, created outstanding family and county coat of arms for a competition, dramatized and illustrated the story of Setanta, researched and wrote reports on a famous artist, made periscopes, composed Halloween soundscapes for music, designed and made unique 3D buildings among many more creative activities. Choice time awards were having a fun pyjama and desk swap day.

Of course the highlight of all was supporting our boys as they reached the final of their Cumann na mBunscol School football league. Well done on your wonderful achievement boys!

We hope you all have a fun Halloween break and looking forward to the adventures that the next term brings!

Happy Halloween from 3rd and 4th Class

It’s hard to believe, we are at the end of the first half of term already – we have been busy in 3rd and 4th class.

The boys and girls have worked extremely hard since September and should be very proud of their efforts.

In Maths – we have been exploring addition, subtraction and multiplication, all of which will set us up to tackle lots of other areas in Maths throughout the year.

In English, we have been busy with Recount and Report Writing. The children wrote some exceptional pieces,  about fairies. We will be keeping a close eye out next time we are in the woods, to see if we can spot one! They also blew their teacher away, with some amazing reports on a country of their choice – super impressive!

In Irish, we have been exploring the Aimsir Chaite Briathra Rialta. The boys and girls have really grasped these over the past few weeks which is amazing! We have also been practicing forming our own sentences in Gaeilge through games which has been great fun! We looked at Mé Féin and Bia.

We have been learning about our bodies, inside and out as well as delving into the past, learning about The Stone Age.

To top it all off, we have been in full swing practicing for our big show and by golly is it going to be a good one, not to be missed!

We made some fantastic mosaic pumpkins and had a spooky colouring competition.

The children made a fantastic effort with their costumes for our Halloween Dress Up in aid of Trick or Treat for Temple Street so well done to everyone. We enjoyed our Halloween disco and assembly where we performed our Oíche Shamhna song for the whole school.

Well done to all the boys and girls in 3rd and 4th who have made a great start to the school year. We can’t wait to see what comes next. Have a very Happy and Safe Halloween!
