Six Bricks in First & Second Class

Six Bricks is one of the LEGO® Foundation’s tools to introduce learning through play into different settings.

Through fun and short activities with sets of LEGO® DUPLO® bricks in six bright colours, children can practice their memory, movement, creativity and more. You can adapt activities and of course make your own activities to match the children’s skills and interests.

Student Council

In January 2023 we seen the establishment of the first student council in St. Michael’s National School. The aim of the student council is to provide students with greater involvement in the decision-making procedures of the school and learn about the democratic process. We believe that students have a vital role to play in creating a positive and welcoming school environment conducive to learning and happiness. We predict that our Student Council will play a requisite role in achieving this.

Two children from each class were elected by secret ballot on Friday 13th January and will retain their positions on the council for the duration of the school year. Infant classes are represented by the two elected pupils from 6th Class. Well done to everyone who applied to be part of our first ever student council. You have worked very hard and we are very proud of you all.

We are delighted to introduce our new Student Council to you all. The children elected for the 2022/2023 school year are as follows:

1st Class – Kylah and Eoghan

2nd Class – Katelyn and Luke

3rd Class – Saoirse and Kyle

4th Class – Amy and Oisín

5th Class – Lucy and Ben

6th Class – Zara and Isobel

Our first student council meeting will take place on Wednesday 18th January at 2pm.

Happy Christmas from 3rd and 4th Class

What a busy time we have had in 3rd and 4th class in the lead up to Christmas!

Kicking off with our fantastic production of ‘School of Rock’ – we could not be prouder of the boys and girls!

In Maths, we have spent lots of time exploring fractions and decimals using different games.

We have been like elves creating lots of Christmas Art, with our Funky Reindeer, our beautiful Christmas wreaths, as well as recycling old Christmas cards to make new ones!

Finally, we had a visit from Santa himself and the boys and girls were all on the nice list to receive a beautiful gift.

To end an extremely cold week, we brought our procedural writing to life, as we made a lovely cup of Hot Chocolate topped with marshmallows!

It has certainly been a busy term and as we approach the holidays, I would like to wish everyone a very happy and safe Christmas.

From Mrs Lennon.

School of Rock

After weeks of rehearsals, we were delighted to perform our school musical ‘School of Rock’ for the community on Thursday 8th December.

We are incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication of every child in our school. From designing posters and tickets, to learning lines and perfecting dance moves, no task was ever too much for the children. They were determined to put on a good show, and what a show it was – we were blown away by their incredible performance! Such a wonderful display of talent and energy!

As always, there were many people behind the scenes who helped us put on such an amazing show. Thank you to Tara McAuley, our musical director, for her dedication over the past number of years. Thank you to Karen McDermott for her beautiful backdrop, and to Mark McDermott for videoing the show. Thank you to everyone in Lisdoonan Community Centre for going above and beyond to help as always. Thank you finally to the parents who donated prizes for the raffle, your unending support doesn’t go unnoticed!

What an amazing end to 2022 in St. Michael’s National School!

Big Excitement for the Toy Show Tonight!

Mrs. Mc Guirk’s 1st and 2nd Class had great fun today, designing jumpers for Ryan Tubridy for tonight’s show. I think you will all agree, they have done a really good job.
Enjoy the show tonight everyone!

Congratulations Shéa!

Congratulations and well done to Shéa Kelly who won a First Aid Kit for our school. He won a colouring competition at Pilgrims Food Master’s for Health and Safety Week.

Science Week 14th-28th November 2022

1st and 2nd Class have been very busy in the field of science. We had Louise Swords from CLAYOTIC in on Monday 14th of November 2022, using clay to make various different dinosaurs with the children. We had a webinar from Linda Birkin, telling us lots of facts about insects. We also learned lots of different Science facts each day and completed various exciting experiments in class too. Have a look at our Science expertise at work below!

Halloween 2022

We had great day on 28th October 2022 celebrating Halloween in St. Michael’s National School. The children dressed up and each class had a Halloween party. We also held a whole-school Halloween disco. We took part in ‘Trick or Treat for Sick Children’ and raised almost €300 for this very worthy cause, well done everyone!

We also held our monthly assembly, where numerous children were awarded with certificates for their hard work this term.

Wishing you all a happy and safe Halloween!

Happy Halloween from 3rd and 4th Class

It’s hard to believe, we are at the end of the first half of term already – we have been busy in 3rd and 4th class.

The boys and girls have worked extremely hard since September and should be very proud of their efforts.

In Maths – we have been exploring addition, subtraction and multiplication, all of which will set us up to tackle lots of other areas in Maths throughout the year.

In English, we have been busy with Recount and Report Writing. The children wrote some exceptional pieces,  about fairies. We will be keeping a close eye out next time we are in the woods, to see if we can spot one! They also blew their teacher away, with some amazing reports on a country of their choice – super impressive!

In Irish, we have been exploring the Aimsir Chaite Briathra Rialta. The boys and girls have really grasped these over the past few weeks which is amazing! We have also been practicing forming our own sentences in Gaeilge through games which has been great fun! We looked at Mé Féin and Bia.

We have been learning about our bodies, inside and out as well as delving into the past, learning about The Stone Age.

To top it all off, we have been in full swing practicing for our big show and by golly is it going to be a good one, not to be missed!

We made some fantastic mosaic pumpkins and had a spooky colouring competition.

The children made a fantastic effort with their costumes for our Halloween Dress Up in aid of Trick or Treat for Temple Street so well done to everyone. We enjoyed our Halloween disco and assembly where we performed our Oíche Shamhna song for the whole school.

Well done to all the boys and girls in 3rd and 4th who have made a great start to the school year. We can’t wait to see what comes next. Have a very Happy and Safe Halloween!
