Learning about Minibeasts

Minibeasts in Mrs. Mc Guirk’s Room!

We have been busy learning about the characteristics of different minibeasts this month! We learned about many different minibeasts that we find in nature. We wrote about their defining traits and picked our favourites and did our own research to find out 5 Fabulous Facts about them.  We shared our findings with the class ‘as reporters’ on our own Nature Show called ‘Creepy Crawlies Unveiled’!  We then went outdoors and went on a search for which minibeasts we could find. The children completed worksheets in groups to identify which minibeasts they had found. We also decided to draw our own imaginary minibeasts.  Have a look at some of the things we got up to below!

John ‘The Runner’ McGeough One Mile Race

Congratulations to Seán-Óg and Lucy who completed the John ‘The Runner’ McGeough One Mile Race in Blackhill on Friday 3rd May 2019. Seán-Óg completed the race in 5 minutes 30 seconds, and Lucy completed it in 12 minutes. Both children were quite close to John McGeough’s time of 4 minutes 30 seconds.

We are so proud of you both!

Life in Australia

On Friday 12th April 2019, we were very lucky to have a guest from Australia visit our school. Tiernan (3rd Class) invited his family friend Peter to come in and speak to the children all about his life in Australia. The children learned about Australian foods, pastimes, geography and animals.

It was a brilliant learning experience and the children loved hearing the first-hand experiences of a true Australian!

The Solar System

After spending the month of April focusing on our topic ‘The Solar System’, Ms Atkinson’s class created their own mini solar systems to scale using recycled materials. This required children to use their geographical, mathematical and artistic skills – the results were amazing!

Easter 2019

To celebrate Easter 2019, Ms Atkinson’s class created beautiful Easter Baskets in Art.

School Tour 2019

Staff and pupils were full of excitement on Thursday 1st May 2019 as we set off on our annual school tour. Our destination was the ‘Crystal Maze Outdoor Activity Venue’ in Kilmainhamwood. The children got involved in several physical, mental, skill and water-based challenges, based around Ireland’s largest hedge maze. The day was enjoyed by all and everyone arrived home in great form after their fun filled day of activities.

60 Minute Physical Activity Challenge

We dedicated a total of 60 minutes to physical activity both in school and at home as part of our Active School Campaign. We really have kicked 2019 off to a Healthy Start!
