Getting into the Christmas Spirit

This week and last week Mrs. Mc Guirk’s Room have been busy singing ‘Calóga Sneachta’, as well as talking and writing about ‘An Fear Sneachta’ in our Gaeilge Lessons. We listened to ‘The Snowman’ by Raymond Briggs and completed a sequencing activity, where we had to tell the story by putting pictures in the correct order. The children told the story orally individually and in groups – they put the story into in their own words in written form, using the pictures to help. We completed an art lesson, watching the movie version of ‘The Snowman’. The children had lots of inspiration and were very busy making their own ‘Snazzy Snowmen’ and also ‘Sensational Sock Snowmen’.

On Friday 30th November 2018, Annie, Molly and Maggie were graded in kickboxing. Annie received her brown belt, Molly received her purple belt and Maggie received her green belt.

Annie and Molly then had a kickboxing fight on Sunday 2nd December, with Annie receiving a silver medal and Molly receiving a bronze.

The girls attend kickboxing classes in Carrickmacross every week and have made fantastic progress over the past few years.

Well done girls!

Halloween In Our Classroom 2018

Halloween in Our Classroom 2018!

This year we were ‘SPOOKTACULARLY‘ busy in Mrs Mc Guirk’s classroom.  We created many pieces of art which can be seen below in our  gallery.  We played Irish games and sang Irish Songs for ‘Oíche Shamhna’.  We created some lovely ‘Cartaí Oíche Shamhna’ and ‘Mascanna’.  We looked at Acrostic Poems and Mrs. Mc Guirk was delighted with the creativity shown by her pupils when they wrote some of their own.  We learned about Halloween Safety in S.P.H.E. and also learned about the History of Halloween in History!  In music, we practised our moves to some Halloween Songs.  On the day of our Halloween Holidays we celebrated by dressing up for Temple Street Children’s Hospital and also getting involved in an active Halloween themed event as part of our Active School and Health Promoting School campaign. Pictures of our Halloween dress up for Temple Street and our dress up winners can be seen in our Temple Street Post! Pictures of our active event can be seen on our Active Flag Page.  After all this activity, we still had time to make spooky buns and play some fun Halloween Games.

Conor Mc Skeane Memorial Shield 2018

Congratulations to the children who won the Conor Mc Skeane Shield in September 2018. Well done on your fantastic efforts! It is wonderful to see our school competing in this very special and worthwhile annual event.

Maths Week 2018

As part of Maths Week, Mrs McGuirk’s room participated in various events associated with the theme ‘Keeping Active’. Children participated in active number rhymes with actions.  We continued with our Malin to Mizen head walking challenge. We participated in number orienteering, passing a ball around a circle in a given time, action counting songs and using body parts and measuring implements to measure different distances! Well done all for your Active Participation!!

Reading Challenge Success!!

Well done to Jack (3rd Class) and Kellie (2nd Class) who successfully completed the Summer Reading Challenge in their local libraries. They both read eight books and were rewarded for their fantastic efforts with medals and certificates.

Well done to you both!

First Holy Communion 2018

The 5th of May 2018 was a momentous occasion for the first communicants in St.Michael’s N.S. The community of Donaghmoyne gathered together with pride to watch these twelve children (four girls and eight boys) make their First Holy Communion. The children’s participation on the day, combined with their artwork to decorate the Church made it truly memorable for all.

The school choir also enhanced the ceremony beautifully. This long anticipated day was a huge success. Well done to the first communicants and to their families for all their hard work on the journey that led to this day. Heartfelt thanks to our officiating priest, Father Daly, and to all those involved.

Active Schools Week 2018

As part of our Active Flag Campaign and to celebrate Active Schools week,  we had a spring themed Sports Day on Friday 27th April 2018. These events were supervised by the staff and members of the Active Schools Committee. All these events were fun and encouraged physical activity in a fun setting! Please have a peek at the wonderful things our children got up to on the day.

Active Non-Competitive Running Initiative

This initiative proved successful in our school. We began our running challenge in March 2019 and have been doing it everyday. Weather didn’t stop our efforts! We used our walking track for this initiative, running ten laps or  1 km  each day per classroom. This equated to 3km a day and 15km per week! Our challenge was to complete 60km in total, within the space of 4 weeks. We tried to do our running after lunch and this kept us awake and alert to complete our afternoon’s work. Before and after our run our Active Leaders lead some warm-up and cool-down activities. The children really enjoyed this initiative and we still get the children out for a jog as part of our active breaks!

Oral Hygiene Workshop

On 8th March ’17 Maureen Mc Inearney visited our school to train our staff on the importance of oral health for children. Staff completed a course to equip them with the skills necessary to teach children about how necessary it is for them to look after their teeth and gums. Parents also received a lesson on oral hygiene in a workshop provided by Maureen. Everyone learned about the importance of correct teeth brushing and a healthy diet to ensure a healthy smile. Children received certificates and oral hygiene packs from Maureen for completing the Mighty Mouth Programme.
