Our infants learned all about St. Brigid this February, and made their own St. Brigid’s crosses. Well done everyone!
November and December in 1st and 2nd Class
We all had a lovely Halloween and were ready for lot’s of fun and learning on our return to school.
In English, we focused on report writing and wrote reports on several animals including bats, snakes and crocodiles. We enjoyed lots of oral language games around the theme of winter. We made a lot of effort daily in our accelerated reading. Lot’s of children completed our Readathon challenge. Well Done All! Second Class are busy working on our class book, which we hope to send off for publication in December.
In Gaeilge, we learned lots of new vocabulary around the theme of ‘An Scoil’ agus ‘Éadaí’ and practised this in various oral language games, songs and roleplays.
Our focus in maths has been in place value and addition and we have been practicing these topics daily through games and written activities.
In S.E.S.E. we have been learning about our body, functions of our body parts and also the importance of healthy eating, exercise and sleep for our overall well being. We participated in science week (12-19th November), carrying out some interesting experiments. We discovered that ketchup is really good for cleaning dirty coins!!
In S.P.H.E., we learned about road safety and looked at improvements we could make, to make our school safer in this regard.
In art, we designed Christmas Cards, entered a Christmas colouring competition and also made some ‘Snazzy Snowmen’. We also designed our own road safety signage. We also designed some Christmas jumpers for the ‘Toy Show. We also designed our own Christmas stockings! We also wore our pyjamas on the same day, as part of our whole class reward system.
We have also been very busy practicing for our Carol Concert due to take place on 30th December 2023, in Saint Lastra’s Church.
We had our November assembly and rewarded pupils for their reading efforts in the Readathon and also in Accelerated Reading.
The girls and boys should be very proud of their efforts during the month of November and December.

Christmas in the Infant Classroom 2023
Our were infants were very busy this December getting ready for Christmas.
We worked on our cutting skills, creating these beautiful Christmas trees from card.
We took some time out of our usual phonics routine to complete some revision activities.
We collaborated with 1st and 2nd class to take part in a whole-school quiz as arranged by our student council. It was great fun!
We made beautiful clay Christmas tree decorations for someone special at home as part of the Arts curriculum.
We followed a recipe to make gingerbread houses.
And finally we had a visit from the man himself – Santa Claus!
Term 2 in 5th & 6th Class
There was lots of incredible work going on in 5th & 6th class since Halloween as the pupils worked co-operatively in their buddy groups to plan, research, display and present outstanding projects on The Vikings. We also learned a lot about Tourism in Ireland from which emerged wonderful Tourism brochures.
In Irish very entertaining and educative role plays were devised and produced on the theme of ‘Ag Siopadóireacht’. In English impressive narrative poems were wrote. In Science the pupils learned a lot about the human ear, its parts and functions and the mechanics of how the ear works. An integral part of this learning was experimenting with making a model ear and needless to say the results were amazing.
The pupils artistically created the most beautiful winter landscape scenes that I have ever seen. Lots of fun was had in mixing the paint and experimenting with obtaining lighter and darker shades. The results speak for themselves…well done everyone!
The lead into Christmas this year was a busy one, the highlight of which was what I can only describe as a breathtaking Christmas Carol Service. We hope you enjoyed the ‘Fairytale of Donaghmoyne’, 5th & 6th class style! Santa came to visit and it’s no surprise that all the boys and girls in the senior room are on the good list! Lots of other fun activities took place such as travelling to Inniskeen to watch ‘Shrek’ by Blackstaff NS, taking part in our whole school Christmas quiz, making Christmas cards using fabric & fibre and of course a class party with lots of sweets & treats.
Well done to the boys and girls in the senior classes for your attention, diligence and hard-work this term. Now lots of chocolate has been well earned over the Christmas break! Merry Christmas everyone and I look forward to seeing you all in the new year.
First Term in 3rd and 4th
It has been a great start to the year in 3rd and 4th class. The children have been busy in all subjects.
In Maths, we have revised addition and subtraction and learned all about collecting data and representing data. We have also started to explore multiplication and division, and dived into the world of fractions.
The children have been working hard at their Irish verbs and have really started to grasp the rules behind them.
We learned all about the Egyptians and rocketed into space as we explored the planets.
The children really enjoyed completing their group projects and were excited to share their findings with their classmates.
Our writing skills were put to the text when we looked at recount writing and report writing, and I can definitely see some potential journalists among us.
In science we investigated the importance of the footprint and its relationship to ones height. We also learned about how it is used in crime investigations.
We did printing for Halloween art and played spooktacular games.
The children should be very proud of all their hard work this term!
Term 1 in Junior and Senior Infants
What a wonderful first term our infants have had. The children have settled in really well to school life and we are so proud of them! Here are just a few things we have gotten up to over the past number of months..
The children have taken part in many fun and engaging P.E. lessons.
The children got creative during our aistear lessons.
The boys and girls have had a great time learning to read.
We visited St. Lastra’s Church and went on a walk around the area to find signs of Autumn.
And finally, we made yummy rice krispie buns as a Halloween treat!
Maths Week in Infants 2023
Our infants were very busy using their mathematical skills during Math’s Week 2023. Have a look at what we got up to…
We played snakes and ladders in pairs.
We created beautiful pattern socks.
We learned all about time and made our own watches.
We studied shadows, as well as shape and space, by designing chalk drawings in the yard.
Halloween 2023
A huge well done to all of the boys and girls who took part in ‘Trick or Treat for Sick Children 2023’. We raised an amazing €267.30 for this very worthy cause and had great fun in the process!
A Super Term in 5th & 6th Class
5th & 6th Class have had an amazing and very busy first term.
Impressive group projects on the Romans were planned, designed and presented. This learning inspired some unique Roman pottery pieces.
In Gaeilge the pupils learned about the topics of ‘Mé Féin’ and ‘Bia’. Delicious menus and recipes were planned as a result. In Maths the pupils did a lot of valuable work in Number and Data, especially in learning how to calculate averages.
In Science the pupils learned a lot about ‘The Eye’ leading to outstanding 3D models and a fun quiz afternoon.
The senior classroom has been a hive of musical activity this term from learning about musical instruments, to writing song lyrics to a very enjoyable karaoke session! We have also resumed tin whistle lessons and hopefully we can showcase this talent very soon.
Fr.Linus visited our classroom various times and we really enjoyed his teachings on Ghana and his friendly chats. He had great fun making cupcakes with the pupils and our student teacher Ms O’Connor!
The boys from 4th, 5th and 6th class represented our school with wonderful distinction in the Cumann na mBunscol school league this term. The boys won all but one of their games in which they were narrowly defeated. We are very proud of them all!
Lots of learning and fun took place on the theme of Halloween with Picasso Frankenstein Art work, poetry, report writing on Halloween traditions not to mention engaging in a variety of games & activities and of course having some delicious Halloween treats! Well done on all of your hard efforts this term 5th & 6th class. Have a SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN and I can’t wait to see what our next term brings!!
Autumn Activities in 1st and 2nd Class
We were very busy in autumn in our classroom!! Below are but a few of the activities we completed!!
In English we focused on recount writing and learned about story structure. We practiced various poems and focused on expression when reading aloud. Second class are working on a book entitled ‘Rainforest Animals are Important’, which we hope to send off for publication on completion. We engaged in various online workshops via zoom to learn about different author’s and their creations. We also listened to a Halloween story called ‘The Spooky Invitation’ and created our own invitations and recipes based on the story.
In Gaeilge we learned lots of vocabulary around the themes of Mé Féin and An Bhaile. We also worked on the theme of Oíche Shamhna. We played games, we sang songs and did roleplays in order to practice the new vocabulary we encountered.
In Art, we completed lovely self portraits and worked on Picasso style pictures, we extended pictures to create autumn images, we did some Halloween prints and also made some lovely Halloween figures.
In S.E.S.E. we learned about homes and houses in our environment, our county, changes in autumn and we also made memory books, detailing all the important events in our lives to date. We enjoyed learning about the origin and History of Halloween.
We have been very lucky to have had Ross in with us over the past number of weeks, helping us develop our Gaelic skills. We also engaged in some Halloween themed P.E. games with our teacher.
We also engaged in our monthly School Assembly and performed some songs for the whole school. We also got introduced to our new student council.
We had a visit from Janet who showed us how to make up shoe boxes for the Shoe Box Appeal.
